The top five Twitter client for Ubuntu Linux

While doing research for this piece I was surprised by how many Twitter apps that I’ve used in the past have fallen by the wayside. The apps that are no longer being developed or have stopped working for some obscure reason outweigh the amount of apps that have come along to fill the spaces, despite this I think I’ve managed to compile a list of apps that you may be compelled to try and use and possibly use as your default Twitter app.

Let’s get started.

#5 Choqok

This app is definitely not a looker but it has proven to be stable during my usage. As with all KDE apps it looks pretty terrible on an Ubuntu system running Unity however if you’re running a system with KDE I highly recommend trying Choqok out, where it will look and feel at home.

It’s fairly easy to install the app as it’s available in the official repositories. If you are on a Ubuntu based system, just run this command

$sudo apt-get install choqok

#4 Birdie

This app spawned around the same time Twitter launched an app for OS X a few years ago. This app focuses on simplicity, unlike Choqok with quite complex menus, Birdie includes nothing more than the home timeline, replies, direct messaging, view your profile and custom searches. On the whole it fits in really well with Ubuntu and should look good on other systems.

Command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:birdie-team/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install birdie

#3 Twitter App in Firefox

Keeping true to Firefox’s whole ‘web apps are best apps’ mantra this extension is just the mobile web app that attaches to the side of your Firefox window. Many of the apps that were released for Linux ended up broken due to changes that Twitter made, this plugin will not suffer from any changes Twitter make and will simply be updated as the mobile web page changes.

As this selection comes directly from Twitter you will get new changes that Twitter implement into their mobile web client. This is the only app in the list that includes the Discover feature on Twitter.

#2 Corebird

This app keeps posts on the timeline quite short by condensing images down to a 1.5 CM strip which expands into a borderless window displaying the full image.

The app takes a simplistic approach and appears to be stylised after the Twitter app on OS X with buttons down the left hand side to navigate to mentions etc.

command:

Install:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/corebird
if you are on Ubuntu 14.04 you need to install GNOME 3 dependencies:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
then:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install corebird

#1 Polly

This app comes without any great show stopping bugs. The only issue with this app was that I had to manually launch it from the terminal on first boot by typing polly, from then on I could launch it from the app launcher.

As I mentioned on the last app suggestion, when using a Twitter app in full screen mode

command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:conscioususer/polly-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y polly
